Interesting Facts
1) There are more than 40 species of deer worldwide.
2) Deer’s eyes are on the side of their head, this gives them a wide vision angle of 310 degrees. They also have very well-developed night vision.
3) Deer can move their ears and make them face different directions without moving their head because of the muscles they possess. They can also pick up sound frequencies higher than humans.
4) Great sense of smell. Their sense of smell picks up predators from far distances. They keep their noses moist by licking them, which improves their smelling ability.
5) Deer are great swimmers and can run extremely fast when trying to get away from threats.
6) Male deer shed their antlers once a year, and then spend the rest of the year regrowing their antlers for the following cycle.
7) The Canadian Rocky Mountain in North America hosts the largest concentration of deer.
8) A fawn (baby deer) can normally walk within half an hour of being born. Fawns do not have a smell, helping them avoid predators.
9) Deer can live up to 15 years.
10) Their eyes change colour depending on the season. In the summer, deer’s eyes are brown so that they can see better in bright sunlight. In the winter, their eyes turn a bright beautiful yellow colour to help them see better in the dark of night.
