A chicken is a bird. One of the features that differentiate it from most other birds is that it has a comb and two wattles. The comb is the red appendage on the top of its head, and the wattles are the two appendages under the chin. These are more prominent in male chickens.
Interesting Facts
1) Chickens have very well-developed colour vision. Just like humans, they can see red, green and blue. However, unlike humans, they can also see violet and ultraviolet lights.
2) The colour of the eggs a chicken lays does not depend on the chicken’s colour. Rather, it is determined by genetics. It comes from their earlobes – if a chicken has red earlobes the eggs will be brown. If the earlobes are white – the eggs will also be white.
3) Chickens are omnivores, which means that they can eat insects, lizards, toads, even field mice.
4) Chickens have a great memory and can recognize over 100 faces.
5) They can dream when they sleep and can see their dreams in colour, just like humans.
6) Chickens can live up to 10 years.
7) Chickens can taste saltiness, but not sweetness.
8) When a chicken gets its head cut off, it can run the length of a football field before dropping dead.
9) Mother hens talk to their chicks while they are still in the eggs, and the chicks can chirp back while in the shell.
10) There are hundreds of different chicken breeds in the world. But, no matter the breed, their eggs can only be white or brown.
